Some tail-wagging improvements are on the way for the Estevan Police Service that will add to their capabilities in their service to the public. This will be in the form of bringing back a K-9 unit to the force.

"Towards the end of last year the decision was made and was given board support. It's quite a process by the time we have a dog and handler trained and ready to hit the road, and it takes a bit of time in getting all the necessary equipment in place," related Police Chief Paul Ladouceur

"We've ordered all the required equipment as far as the kennel and things like that. The vehicle has just arrived, it has the decals on and ready to go, and now we're at the stage of dog selection."

He says that as soon as the animal is picked, the officer will begin his training, most likely in April.

"Once that's been completed we'll hit the road. We're hoping that by summer we'll have an active K-9 unit back in action for the citizens of Estevan."

"This is the public's dog, and it's the public's police service. We're proud of it," he added.

Ladouceur also revealed that the canine's name will be chosen through a contest in the schools.
