Southeast Newcomer Services is helping out Newcomers with the 2019 Driver Education Course.

The Driver Education Program is a 6 hour in class and 6 hours in car training. The cost of the program is $700 per student, and Southeast Newcomer Services will provide partial funding covering $350 of the cost. Newcomers will pay the remaining balance.

This program is open to Permanent Residents and Temporary Residents in Saskatchewan, in the area serviced by Southeast Newcomer Services, who are required to complete a driver education program to obtain a Saskatchewan driver's license.

Stephanie Davis one of the advisors at Southeast Newcomer Services, "So we offer newcomers our driver education program, this program is for driver's who have immigrated here from another country that did not have a driver's license. Or if they did have a driver's license SGI is requiring that they take the driver education program. We are offering to pay 50% but it is an application process, and we go through and choose the clients that it fits the best and for those clients, they are offered the program."

Newcomers from different countries have quite a bit of public transportation and haven't always had a need to get a license, "The Philippines is one where you may not have a driver's license from back home, but they are very eager to get their license once they come to Canada. A lot use bikes, motorbikes, and mopeds things like that."

The deadline for the course Davis says, "So April 5th is the deadline and we have it for all of our service regions within Southeast Saskatchewan, so it could be Kipling, Beinfait, it could be the smaller rural towns, as well as Estevan and Weyburn."

Applicants are required to fill out an application form and submit applicable supporting documentation. You can stop by the Estevan office to pick up the application in person or go to SNS page to fill out the application. Check application eligibility and make sure you have everything you need.
