The 15 member agencies of this year's Estevan United Way Telethon are getting pumped in anticipation of the event to be held on October 27 and 28th at the Legion Hall.

Among those excited organizations is the Estevan Regional Nursing Home Auxiliary. Their volunteers oversee and provide recreational programming for residents of the home, planning outings, birthday parties and the like.

"The money that we receive from the United Way makes a difference every day. We could not have the diversity of programs that meet our residents' needs without the support. Each dollar makes a huge difference in their lives," expressed President Rhonda Olver.

"We are a big facility. We have 70 beds here, and people from their late 60's to over 100 years old, so we've got a lot of different needs that need to be met. As people age and disease progresses, those needs change, and we have to adapt to meet those. Our goal is to provide a home environment, and to make each day the best it can be."

This year's funds will go towards programs such as events, outings in the Smile van, shopping, meals out, personal care and more for the residents.

"Getting out into the community is an absolute joy to these folks. It's something that you and I take for granted...we just hop in our vehicle and go...these people don't have that ability anymore. Going out and making a choice at a restureant for what they want to eat is a privelage to them. Being out and about, they see how Estevan has changed, they see former friends and neighbors, and it's a breath of fresh air," Olver explained.

Last year the Auxiliary was able to purchase items such as accessiblity chairs with the proceeds handed them by the United Way.

Things get under way this year at the Legion Hall at 8:00 AM Friday morning.
