Andrew James Young and Lindy Erin Darling are each facing a long list of charges following their arrest on March 18, but it will be a few more months before they are again answering those particular charges in court. Their matter has been set over for a preliminary hearing on August 10.

Young, age 39, and Darling, age 37, were arrested by the Estevan Police Service last month and both charged with sexual assault, assault, and forcible confinement. Young was also charged with sexual interference, administering a noxious substance, and uttering threats. Both are presumed innocent.

The Criminal Code of Canada defines sexual interference as "Every person who, for a sexual purpose, touches, directly or indirectly, with a part of the body or with an object, any part of the body of a person under the age of 16 years."

Preliminary hearings, according to the Department of Justice, are held to decide whether there is enough evidence to send a case to trial. It is only used in cases where the accused faces charges of an indictable offense. If the accused pleads not guilty, a trial date is set.

Young and Darling already had another preliminary hearing set for June 17, facing charges of conspiracy to traffic cocaine. They were arrested on these charges on May 1 of 2020 following an investigation that began in 2019.
