The city of Estevan's pathway project is continuing construction, as the season begins to change from summer to fall.

The nearly $4 million dollar project is looking to provide residents in the city with a pathway that will extend throughout the city, with both northern and southern portions of the track.

The combined 13 kilometers of Pedestrian Corridor Expansion will be joining existing pathways, with the entire project having a deadline of December 31st.

City Manager of Leisure Services, Parks, and Facilities Rod March says that so far they've been making good progress.

"The pathway project is progressing very well, the ground side of it for sure," said March, "We've got 60% of the roadwork complete and we're right on budget with that. We're about to start our project underneath a rail Trussel which will be a major endeavor to get under there so we'd ask for people's patience around the traffic safety-wise for the crews and people working there.

"We'll be carrying on through the south, you can see right now that we're on the south side of the highway, heading up towards port Alice, so the north side's pretty much complete in terms of the pathway but now we're working on the south side and things are going relatively well. We've still got a lot to do and we're hoping that the weather is holding up as it is."

March says the pathways will be walking - which does put restrictions on what exactly can be on the asphalt.

"Certainly we expect people to be rollerblading, biking, and stuff like that, but they are designated as walking paths, and the reason for that is the design criteria for anything with speeds, the elevations of the curves, everything is totally different, which would be astronomical in costs," said March, "So that's why they're walking paths."

March says that some smaller vehicles are allowed on the pathways, for anyone who might want to access them through a mobility scooter.

The city is also planning out an interactive map online, though that may be subject to change.

"Right now, as we keep plowing ahead, there's going to be minor changes here and there depending on what we hit in terms of controls along the way, could be anything, including underground utility making us change that location," said March, "So once everything's finalized we can map that and do up an interactive map."
