The second Believe In The Gold run in Regina kicks off Saturday morning, with all funds raised going straight to support the families of those undergoing cancer treatments.

In the southeast, the Payton Sernick and her family will be among the recipients this year once again, as Payton continues treatment in Calgary.

The funds can cover anything required, "whether it's meal expenses, travel expenses, or if they need a piece of equipment or something like that, then they can apply for funding from Believe in the Gold and be reimbursed for that," explained Andrea Sernick, Payton's mother.

"It's really nice. There are a lot of organizations, there's a lot of places to put your money, but Believe in the Gold is definitely one that is direct for families who need it, right now."

Last year's event, which included a pancake breakfast, different lengths for participants to walk or run as they chose, and other entertainment, was put on by the alumni of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, as it is again this year.

While Payton won't be particpating this year as she's still under treatment, some family members and friends will participate in the Regina event, and in it's sister in Calgary. However, she is on the mend and has made leaps and bounds in her recovery.

"Payton reached her 100 day mark, post transplant, so that was a big celebration for us. She successfully passed with her PET scan, and results came back with zero cancer cells, so that's been amazing. It's such a great feeling. We still have lots of things to watch out for and be aware of, but it's just one breath that we get to take on this first real step of the transplant journey," Sernick said.

The family plans to remain in Calgary for the time being to finish the treatments and follow ups.

"She's excited to get back going with school, that's a big highlight for her. We're doing everything through Facetime with her tutor right now, so she's excited to get back to school, get back to all her friends of course...and activities. We're all looking forward to getting back to Estevan at some point."
