The roller coaster weather experienced by the southeast throughout the winter season has had it's effect not only on the residents, but on the wildlife as well, as they have had to move closer to populated areas to find sufficient food. Of course, this means that the chances of encountering them, sometimes unexpectedly, is all the more real.

"We've noticed quite a few deer at the roadside lately, often up to a dozen at a time just sitting by themselves on the side of the highway," related Constable Daniel Gaignard of the Estevan RCMP.

"When they decide to move, especially at night, you may not be meeting just one, you could see a whole group trying to cross the road. They could be very difficult to avoid."

The RCMP is asking the public to keep a sharp eye out for the creatures when travelling, especially at night. Gaignard said that there is one important way to assist with this.

"Whenever it is practicable and safe, you should use your high beams. They help to illuminate a wider path of the road. Obviously, you need to remember to turn them down when you are approaching other vehicles, but whenever possible remember to turn them back on."

He also reiterated the importance of keeping your focus on the highway when driving, and not letting yourself get distracted with items such as your cellphone.
