Saskatchewan RCMP has laid charges in the fatal collision involving the Humboldt Broncos on April 6th, which killed 16, and left 13 more injured.

RCMP say Jaskirat Sidhu, a 29-year-old man from Calgary, is responsible for the collision and faces a number of charges. They include 16 charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, and 13 charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. The charges carry a sentence of up to 14 years per charge, and 10 years per charge respectively.

During a press conference held Friday afternoon in Regina, the RCMP explained Sidhu was arrested without incident in Calgary in the morning. He was remanded into custody and will be making his first court appearance in Saskatchewan Provincial Court next week.

The Humboldt Broncos team bus, heading north, collided with the semi driven by Sidhu, heading west, at the intersection of Highway 335 and Highway 35 south of Nipawin on April 6th. The Broncos were travelling to Nipawin for a playoff game when the collision happened.

Prior to the media release by the RCMP, they met with the families of the victims of the accident via video conference, with the families gathered in Edmonton and Saskatoon.
