The Redvers Health Center has been focusing on trying to improve the residents lives.

"The Sun Country health region has a effort out to improve and increase the mobility of the residents, if they walk then encourage them to walk more, if they walk with assistance then encourage them to do more, if they're confined to a chair and they can do it on their own then do more. Keep them mobile, it improves their health and it's encouraging for them if they keep moving," shared Barbara Denis with Activities at the Redvers Haven at the Health Center.

"That's the whole idea about destination challenge, the residents and their council chose to go to the Philippines back in December."

"I really didn't know too much about the destination challenge. I said "okay, I have been told that when someone travels they improve their experience by anticipation there of," so I took it to the next level. I went to a travel agency and got a magazine on the Philippines and studied up on the country and their customs," she explained.

"We investigated what their national bird was, that there is over 7,000 islands there only 11 of which are highly populated."

"I just took little bits and pieces of the Philippines and tried to recreate that in a little-used room here in the facility and encouraging everybody to keep moving, we've got to get to the Philippines type thing. We also educated ourselves as to what we would see there when we got there."

"It was very enjoyable for me leading them and also myself and another girl volunteered our time to decorate the room so it would be something to be seen. I also asked some of our staff here who are directly from the Philippines if they would consider volunteering their time and they agreed and they just went to bat with it. They actually had YouTube videos and personal pictures of their own holiday back," expressed Barbara

"For that day we also had a Filipino fair, with the help of the Filipinos I was able to come up with two different afternoon treats as well as a fairly common afternoon drink that you would receive there. Everybody had a taste as well as the look and the feel of the place."

"The residents seemed to be very pleased with it, my greatest critic gave me a thumbs up."

"Depending on the resident, depending on what their need is we as an activity department try to meet those needs with everything from exercise to challenging their mental capacity by trivia, what would you rather do and giving them choices, challenging them to think outside the box and to think about something that they wouldn't maybe think about on a regular average day here at the home," she shared.

"Our next destination is New Zealand, one of my colleges is planning that party so it'll be the end of March."

"I'm always looking for different ideas to bring in and adapt to the situation here, whether it be sharing ugly tie day or Easter bonnets."
