Border officers at the Regway border crossing made an interesting discovery when they stopped a commercial vehicle hauling produce from California to Regina on December 3.

After searching the vehicle, officers found 694 grams of suspected doda in the vehicle cab. The driver, Kamaljit Singh Atwal, 43, of Surrey, B.C. was arrested and turned over to the Radville RCMP. He was charged the following day with one count under the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act.

He will appear on December 12 in Regina Provincial Court.

Doda is an opiate that is made from crushed poppy pops and formed into a powder. Often referred to as "Poor Man's Heroin," it is addictive and dangerous. According to the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act, doda, opium poppies, and its derivatives can only be transported by a licensed dealer under the Narcotic Control Regulations and only with a valid permit.
