The Estevan RCMP can't be everywhere at once and because of this, they want your help to report erratic and potentially impaired drivers.

"If someone is driving erratically, we suggest you pull over, call 911 or call the police," explains Cst. Daniel Gaignard with the Estevan RCMP. "It's best if you have as much detail as possible, if you were able to grab a plate before you stop, direction of travel, what highway you're on, description of the vehicle, description of the driver if you have one and call us and let us know."

However, he cautions drivers not to use a handheld cell phone to make the call as you are putting yourself in danger by doing so.

"If you don't have hands-free and you don't have a passenger to work the phone for you, we'd really like you to pull over. I understand that it's handy to stay behind the car when you call us so you can continue to tell us where they're at, but the dangers of driving distracted because you are on the phone, outweigh the safety you are trying to promote by calling in an impaired driver."

"We really want you to pull over, make the phone call unless you have a passenger in the car who can call for you."

While the RCMP like to focus on impaired drivers, Cst. Gaignard says that there is really no way of knowing if an erratic driver is driving in that way because of impairment or other reason.

"Any dangerous driving that's occurring of any kind should be reported whenever possible."

"Even if it's something where somebody passed you and you feel that their speed was excessive, there's no harm in pulling over and calling and telling us that there is someone out on the highway who is driving too fast. You're never going to get in trouble for calling in a motorist who isn't obeying the laws and driving safely."

He notes that if you are uncomfortable providing a statement to police, you are still asked to call it in and report it.

"If you just want to call it in but you're not willing to provide a statement, if we can locate the vehicle, they're still going to get stopped and spoken to. And in some case, even if it's just all you got for identification was the company name, we even go as far as calling the company if we don't find the truck, and just saying, 'One of your drivers was out around this area at this time, this is what was observed, can you please speak to all of your drivers about this kind of behaviour?' and we leave it at that."

"There's no obligation to provide a statement. If you just want to call and let us know what's going on, we appreciate it."
