As Valentines Day is upon us, SGI is advising the public to treat driving on Cupid's holiday as you would treat your relationship.

SGI Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy outlined how driving and your love life can share some similarities.

"As we were coming up with this list, we realized that some of this advice can also pertain to somebody's love life. The idea of taking it slow, giving other motorists, or the other person you're in a relationship with some space, holding onto them tight, either with your arms or with a seatbelt if you're in a vehicle, and of course its always important to make a plan to be safe, especially when it comes to sharing that romantic bottle of wine in front of a roaring fire."

Noting that alcohol can be a factor in Valentines Day plans, SGI Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy said that planning ahead to how your getting home is always important.

"Some people might be heading out for dinner or having a romantic evening sharing a couple of bottles of wine, so we just want people to keep in mind that that's great, but it's something that they also need to plan ahead for as well. If their Valentine's Day plans or any plans ever involve alcohol, they should plan for a safe ride home."

With a long weekend approaching, McMurchy said that the same warnings would apply for the weekend.

"The number of fatalities and injuries is something we always want to keep an eye on on long weekends. We know that long weekends tend to be busier on the highways and your chance of being in a collision that injures or kills you almost doubles."

McMurchy also said that with an extreme cold warning in the area, getting an impaired driving ticket or having your vehicle impounded may be the least of your worries, in reference to the danger of being stranded in sub-zero conditions.
