The Holy Family has been committed to growing Truth and Reconciliation within their school division.

Superintendent Terry Jordens, "We've been working with Truth and Reconciliation for a number of years within the division, we've done many things in the areas of bringing in Metis elders, traditional knowledge keepers. We've done retreats with our board and principal, our knowledge keepers have been working in our schools with our staff and students as well. One of the recent things we have done that we are proud of is to have the Treaty 4 Medals displayed at each of our schools, we are also flying the Treaty 4 Flag here at our Central office in Weyburn."

"We've acknowledged land and treaty rights to be said before all of our public gatherings, staff meetings, assemblies, any meeting and workshops that we have at our central office."

Jordens add as far as the School level, "We celebrate Orange Shirt Day in September, its a really big deal for our schools and our students. We do lots of community work on that day, and acknowledgment of that. We also have Aboriginal storytelling month, National Indigenous People's Day, and then also recently we put out a note about the National Day of Prayer."

"We do a ton of work getting resources into our schools in this area. Our curriculum coordinator and myself we vet a lot of books and try and get those into the schools." Jordens adds an example, "Each of our school libraries has a treaty kit, a First Nations Culture kit where they have hands-on things that the kids can touch and learn about the culture a little bit more."

"As far as an initiative that we are doing this year is The Leading To Learn, so that's a provincial initiative in the area of anti-racist education. We do have a principal that is taking the co-hart training throughout the year with a provincial group. And she comes back to the principal meetings and works with us on examining our own bias, and creating a welcoming and culturally sensitive school."

The Division will continue to work within the schools to implement more in the next couple of years.
