Estevan's Salvation Army is busy getting ready for the upcoming school year with a back to school backpack program.

"Our back to school backpack program is an event we started a couple of years ago. If families need assistance in getting their kids ready for school, they can come down to the office and fill out an application form for our back to school backpack program and then in the next week or so we'll be calling the families back and they can come in and pick a backpack that is stocked full of supplies for school," explained Ronza Raynard the Administrative Assistant and Family Services Coordinator.

The Salvation Army food bank is in need of school foods.

"We're looking for some juice boxes and children's lunch stuff, things that they can take to school and they can heat it up at school like ready to serve ravioli of macaroni. There's always a high demand for that kind of stuff because we always help out the schools every year and we will take items to the school so they can have it and if a student doesn't have a lunch or they forget their lunch on the bus, this way they won't go without anything. In the food bank itself we're always in the need of pastas, canned vegetables, canned meats, beans, pasta sauces and stuff like that."

"In September Canada post will be hosting its annual food drive for the food bank and that's going to be on Saturday the 16th. We will be looking for volunteers to help sort through those donations and if they can't help with sorting they can help by donating when Canada post comes around on that day," she stated.

Volunteers are always needed at Salvation Army.

"Volunteers are doing fairly okay, we could still use one or two volunteers in the food room. There's always something to be done and with the demand of the food bank being quite high right now, we could use a few helpers with putting away stock and making up hampers."
