If you see some large flames flickering to the north over Wednesday and Thursday, don't dial 911 just yet. While normally that would be the right move, SaskEnergy says that there's nothing to worry about.

"Over the next couple days this week, we're going to be doing some work in the Estevan area, just performing some scheduled upgrades and maintenance on our pipeline system in the area. Whenever we do work to our pipeline system, before we go in and begin we need to first remove the natural gas from the isolated section of pipeline that we'll be working on, just to allow our construction crews to work safely," explained Senior Communications Officer Casey McLeod.

"What we do is flare the natural gas off, and this is really a controlled burn of the natural gas in that pipeline section."

On Wednesday, residents may see a 20 foot blare being released from a 40 foot stack just west of Lampman, a quarter mile north of Highway 361 and two miles east of 47. On Thursday, crews will do the same seven miles east of Bienfait along Highway 18. The processes will take place between 6:00 AM and 9:00 AM both days.

McLeod added that the procedure reduces the carbon footprint of the vented natural gas by 85 percent, compared to other methods.

Local first responders are aware of the plans, and SaskEnergy says that there will be no disruption to customer service during the process.
