The STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Society) annual lottery, a successful fundraiser event that generates money for the organization to fly their 4,000 flights per year in Saskatchewan, is well underway.

That said, there are those out there who are attempting to take advantage of the worthy cause for their own gain.

"Over the past few days, we have received a number of calls from concerned citizens in the area. They have been getting phone calls from someone saying that they are from STARS lottery, indicating that they had won a certain variety of prizes," shared Constable Chad Mehl with the Estevan detachment of the RCMP.

The caller is reported giving their name, a confirmation number, and spoke with an east Indian accent.

"We are encouraging the public to remain vigilant with these types of scams. None of the complaints have yet resulted in the loss of finances or personal information, however, should these continue on their attempted courses they will eventually result in a victim. This will end up in a leaking of detailed personal, banking or credit card information."

Mehl noted that the scams are very difficult to track down, as they are often rooted out of country.

"If you do receive one of these calls, you can contact the Estevan Police Service or Estevan RCMP, or there is a website that you can go to. It's the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre, and they also take complaints of this nature."

"If you are the victim of this particular crime, and have given out personal banking or credit card information as a result of this type of phone call, please contact your local police agency to see if we can further the matter," he concluded.
