It was the 8th Annual Pink Tournament at the Estevan Comprehensive School raising money to battle cancer.

"I just want to thank everyone who supported the Victor Elias Memorial Shoot for a Cure Pink Basketball Tournament," explained Jessie Smoliak, coach of the ECS Girls basketball team. "We raised a total of $17,000 for Mackenzie Delaine. This will go towards any medical or travel expenses that she may have."

"It really hit home especially with my girls because Tara Johns (mother of Mackenzie) is a staff member here at ECS."

She added that it became real for the team when Mackenzie was invited to sit with the team on the Friday night game.

"The girls really saw where all the fundraising was going towards. It was overwhelming."

She mentioned the tournament had an extra meaning to her as they named the tournament after her late father.

"We named the tournament after my dad. He passed away from cancer a year ago. There are very so many people affected by cancer and I really wanted to teach my girls a lesson of paying it forward and giving it back. And I feel that they did an excellent service because they did so much fundraising for Mackenzie prior to the tournament."

The girls organized a 'pie in the face' event that raised $1,000, a pink hat day which brought in another $600. There was also a raffle table and concession that also raised money. Personal donations were also accepted.

"Nathan Jones donated $10,000 and also Justin and Randy Van Achte donated $2,500 towards the cause."

Justin and Randy's mother, Angie Van Achte, was the recipient of last year's donations. Sadly, she passed away in August.

"They paid it forward, and that was one of her wishes was to give back to this tournament and now that money is going to help another little girl fight the battle with cancer."
