It was not the sight you expect to see on the first morning of October - a blanket of snow covering the ground.

"The station is reporting 2mm of liquid equivalent," shared Natalie Hazel, with Environment Canda. That would be the combination of snow and rain. We're guessing somewhere around 2 cm of snow fell but now accumulating on the ground really."

"For the rest of the forecast, we have to wait until we get to Wednesday night before temperatures fall to zero again. We could see some snow late on Wednesday and again on Thursday when it gets cloudy again. That might produce rain showers or flurries because you'll be right by zero at that point."

The average high for today is 16.2oC while we're only expected to see a high of 7oC.

"It's like we're a little bit further on in the season than we actually are. We're going to see below normal temperatures continue at least for another week if not two."

Hazel added that while the snow isn't expected to stick around, now it a great time to make preparations for when the real snowfall comes. Check your shingles and get your furnace looked at. Take a look at any trees around your property that there is no damage. As well, make sure that the emergency kit in your house and in your car is stocked and ready to go. The kit should e able to last you for 72 hours. A checklist of what needs to be in an emergency kit can be found here

"We have some time before real winter hits so take advantage of that. Remember what it was like in previous winters and think of the things you needed then, make sure you actually have them now."
