A snowfall warning has been issued for southeast Saskatchewan, with the possibility of 10 to 15 centimetres of snow falling by Monday morning.

The snow began in southeast Saskatchewan Sunday morning before spreading into Manitoba. The snow is expected to be light and fluffy and therefore will accumulate quickly. Northerly winds between 20 and 30 km/hr will reduce visibility due to the blowing and drifting snow. Be sure to check the Road Report before considering travel.

The forecast for Sunday in the Estevan area indicates snow will be heavy during the day, with 10 centimetres expected. The snow will taper off by evening, with another two to four centimetres of snow expected. The daytime high will be -21 degrees with a windchill of -33 degrees and a risk of frostbite.

Frostbite can occur within 15 minutes to exposed skin. Humans, as well as animals, are at risk of developing frostbite.

"If you feel numbness and then you see a lot of discoloration or persistent swelling than that is certainly an indicator for you to seek medical attention," explained Doctor David Torr with the Saskatchewan Health Authority.

He added that if you see frostbite on your skin, avoid rubbing the area to warm up, dry, or even using lotion as it could cause more nerve damage.

For those who must be outside in the extreme cold, Torr advised having something to eat and drink in the morning to get the metabolism started can help prevent frostbite.
