More people will be out on the highways this weekend and SGI wants you to stay safe.

"Every long weekend," explained SGI's Tyler McMurchy, "we like to remind people that more people will be hitting the road either heading to the lake or visiting family or friends and because those highways are busier, it does increase your chance of being involved in a collision."

"We want people to take care out there and make that they drive in a way that will not result in them being in a collision."

"Obviously long weekends are great, nobody can dispute this, but we want people to make sure that they drive sober and drug-free. They avoid distractions. They drive at an appropriate speed and they buckle up."

In 2016 during the May Long Weekend, there 255 collisions resulting in 82 people injured and 2 deaths.

"Those posted speed limits are for ideal road conditions. Hopefully, we have great weather for this long weekend but it's raining or the visibility is poor in any way, slow down and make sure that you drive at an appropriate speed for the conditions."

SGI is also focusing their Traffic Safety Spotlight on impaired driving for the month of May. Law enforcement will be paying extra attention to those driving while impaired.
