It's one of the largest holidays of the year. Easter weekend is practically upon us, and that means that people will be travelling, eager to visit, relax and celebrate the occasion with family and friends. That said, however, it's rather hard to enjoy a good time for long unless you stay safe.

"Ensure that if you are travelling that you aren't feeling rushed. Make sure that you have enough time to travel safely so that you don't find yourself speeding or making irrational decisions while trying to get there in a hurry," recommended Fire Chief Dale Feser.

"In addition, ensure that any toys that you purchase for kids, especially electrical in nature, are meeting the standards for Canada. This means CSA approved or anything that is recognized here within the country."

Another point noted by the Chief was the fact that there is still a lot of water in the valley on the north end of the city.

"It's moving at a fairly rapid pace, so we'd like to make sure that parents are keeping their eyes on their kids. Make sure that they are not playing in the valley, because even though the water isn't excessively deep it's still running quite quickly. Even adults can easily lose their footing, and should they suffer a concussion or a knock to the head, they can find themselves in trouble."

"A person can drown in as little as a half inch of water in the right conditions, so just exercise some extra caution when you have the kids out there playing over the Easter break. Try to keep them out of the valley until the water subsides," he added.

Feser also alluded that farmers should use caution when burning off their fields to get ready for the farming months, and expressed that they should notify authorities of their intended burn and have measures in place to control it.
