Sirens were heard throughout the Energy City during the early hours of Friday morning as members of the Estevan Fire Department responded to a structure fire northeast of Estevan.

"Upon arriving on the scene, crews encountered a forty by sixty shop that was in flames," related Fire Chief Dale Feser.

"We began suppression activities right away, and it took a total of 4 apparatuses and 12 firefighters to battle the blaze for a considerable amount of time. It was brought under control around 7:00 AM."

He said that the scene is now turned over to the property owner, and that no injuries resulted in the incident. As the fire is still under investigation, they still don't know what caused it, however, it is not being considered incendiary in nature.

Feser shared some tips to help ensure the prevention of such occurrences.

"There is a lot of people that do have insulated and heated shops, so we want to make sure that the heaters are functioning properly and the venting is free and clear. Make sure that there is no combustible or flammable items within one meter or three feet of any gas fired appliances."

"You also want to make sure that your extension cords are fully functional and are not showing any signs of wear and fray, or any signs of arcing. Anytime you have anything plugged into a shop environment, ensure that they are in good condition," he concluded.
