With the recent discovery of the Canada's latest crisis causing drug carfentanil in Estevan, many parents in the area may worry that their children may be exposed to the deadly substance.

Luckily, local schools are doing everything they can to stay ahead of the eight ball by getting the jump on educating their students on the dangers of carfentanil.

"We've been working on that for some time" says principal of the Estevan Comprehensive High School. "With the introduction of (car)fentanil we did just meet again here recently."

While the introduction of carfentanil into the community does raise concern, the new threat is still handled much the same as the others.

"We have a good partnership with addictions and with the Estevan Police Service in terms of what we're trying to do to educate kids about the dangers of all the drugs that are coming into our community and what to be aware of."

Jeannot went on further to say that should they ever need it, the response team from local police and emergency services is always something they can rely on.

"I'm in my fifth year here now and it was actually in my first year that we called everybody together, the school division officials, addictions, and the Estevan City Police to get on top of what are we doing about the drug situation in the area, how can we educate and since then that relationship has been growing."

Shools currently are not carrying any naloxone kits due to decisions that need to be made in the division as well as training that would be required to administer these kits, but that shouldn't be a concern thanks to the services of the people in Estevan.

"At this point, we have a very good emergency response team in our community, so I can't see us administering anything without being fully edjuacted."

"We have such strong partnerships that we know when we need our emergency response teams, they're here."
