The Estevan Public Library has finished up a great summer reading program and is preparing for the fall.

Sarah Wright who helped run this year's programs said, "It worked out really well this year, we had 8 weeks with roughly about 80 kids."

Summer is an important time for students to keep reading and improve their language skills. Wright adds, "The mission of the reading club, which started 7 years ago, was to pretty much stop kids from losing the information they had learned in school. Learning how to read again or not losing the reading that they already have." Numerous studies indicate that students who don’t read or read infrequently during their summer vacation see their reading abilities decline. This effect becomes more pronounced as students get older and advance through the school system.

However, this can be avoided by ensuring that children are as engaged as possible in whatever they choose to read-just as long as they’re reading every day.

In regards to how the smoothly the programs ran, "The kids had so much fun, we got to learn many different things. They got to learn about science, superheroes, do a bunch of different activities. And we hope that, if they enjoyed this year then they'll come back next."

The Library of Estevan's reading programs wrapped up for another summer. And many children benefited from the programs, and there are many more to get involved with throughout the year at the Library as well.
