In an effort to curb overdoses due to fentanyl and other drugs, the Sun Country Health Region, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, will be making Take Home Naloxone Kits available to at risk individuals.

“SCHR is implementing the project to help individuals be prepared and proactive in preventing deaths from opioid overdose," explained Terry Romanow, Regional Director of Mental Health and Addiction Services. "Even one such death is too many.”

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Health is providing $50,000 this year to help fund the project.

The kits will be available, free of charge to those who are considered at risk for an opiod overdose and will be available at the St, Joseph's Hospital in Estevan Monday to Friday, by appointment.

Individuals who qualify must first go through training on how to prevent an overdose, how to recognize signs of an overdose and how to administer the kit correctly. Family and friends of those receiving a kit are also welcome to attend the educational session.

Naloxone can be used to treat those suffering an overdose of fentanyl, morphine, heroin, methadone or oxycodone.
