There were some tense moments in the Town of Oxbow on Tuesday as the Prairie Horizons School was forced to lock it's doors for a little while.

Carnduff RCMP received a complaint just before 12:00 PM that someone had made threats against the school, so members were immediately dispatched and the school administration was contacted. It was then placed in Hold and Secure Mode.

"That's basically when the exterior doors are locked, but classes just continue," explained Sergeant Earl Leblanc with the RCMP Media Relations.

"It's the decision of the administration, from the information that's provided from the RCMP. They went with this route as there was no immediate danger to the school."

"We were able to locate the individual shortly after the complaint had been filed, and then the Hold and Secure was lifted," he related.

"It was good work by the members of the Carnduff and Estevan RCMP detachments," LeBlanc concluded.

"We certainly appreciate the efforts of the RCMP in working closely with us in order to insure the safety of the students and the community," expressed South East Cornerstone School Division Director Lynn Little.

She added that a Hold and Secure is a common procedure in scenarios like this.

As a result of the incident, a 40-year-old male from the Oxbow area has been charged with:

  • Uttering Threats contrary to the Criminal Code.

The RCMP says that the investigation is still ongoing.
