It is a small victory for libraries across the province as Brad Wall announced he has asked the Minister of Education, to re-evaluate the cuts made to the budgets of the provincial and regional libraries.

Although this move does not guarantee funding restoration, local libraries are optimistic.

"It's exciting news," says Children's Coordinator, Victoria Utman. "We are thrilled that the Premier has asked Don Morgan to review the library budgets."

She cautions though, that the battle is not over.

"We still want to remind patrons and our communities that this is just a review. There is no guarantee that our funding will be reinstated. We're encouraging people to strike while the iron is hot and get people to call in to Brad Wall and Don Morgan and express their excitement over this step in the right direction."

She adds that she is overwhelemed with the amount of suppport in the communities across Saskatchewan.

"This is a testimony to that level of support affecting real change. We're thrilled and enthusiastic and tentatively optimistic."

She goes on to say that the decision to review the budget wouldn't have been made without the overwhelming assistance of Saskatachewan communities and people.

"Having a one day protest with nearly 6000 people participating across the province was a huge spotlight on this crisis and these devastating cuts. That, I think, was integral to the decision to review the funding. Also having people write letters, call the MLAs. Those actions, even though they may not feel as large, are still very important. Each letter expressed an opinion of a voting citizen and that's something that out government doesn't take lightly."

Utman plans to continue to keep the pressure on and advocate for libraries.

"Libraries in Saskatchewan are already very frugal. We get by with a minimal budget and we do amazing things with that."
