The Southeast Transportation Planning Committee presented during last Mondays City Council meeting.

"Our job is to keep track of the well being of the transportation system through our area and we count on the people that live in the area to report to us things that need to have attention payed to it. As we get the calls we go and survey what needs to be done and how we're going to get it done," explained Dennis Moore the Chairman for the Southeast Transportation Planning Committee.

"The three areas that concern us is safety being number one and social and economic is important as well because we're moving product. We have in the Social area schools and churches and different organizations having functions that people want to get to, so we have to make sure that the roads are suitable for that transportation part of it."

Highway 47 south to Boundary was been mentioned as a concern during the meeting.

"Not too far down the list we're dealing with highway 47 south of Estevan, that's getting to be a piece of road that could be dangerous if people don't pay attention to their speed because some of the high lows are just about enough to rub bottoms of vehicles. Speed is the big thing, we're even thinking of maybe changing the speed limit on the particular part of the road especially the most wavy part of it so that's on our radar as well," shared Dennis.

"The economic is number one for highway 47 north because we feel we're loosing progress with business, there's a lot of people that just do not want to use that road to come south to Estevan, it's a known fact because we've done counts on it and there's just nobody using it unless if they really have to and I'm talking about the people that live in the immediate area."

"We're really trying to get some focus on that with the ministry to try and correct it but whatever they've done so far hasn't raised it up to the peoples  needs for very long, so we're saying take that money and lets work on it till we have it complete and I think it will happen but probably not until the economics do a little better in the province. We have no idea what we might be loosing out on just because people don't want to travel on that particular road," he explained.

Highway 8 south of Redvers towards the border and highway 18 between Torquay and Oungre are also in need of repairs.

"Highway 8 south of Redvers towards the border has been repaired and repaired and what happened is the base is totally shot we need to do a rebuild there and it's been on our list for quite awhile. The ministry has been out there and looked at it and they've realized that this is another piece of road that should be looked after, it's traveled a lot because that's one of the north-south corridors that people often use," he stated.

"We are getting something done with highway 18 between Torquay and Oungre, that's been a long time getting resurfaced but if we could do a piece a year it would eventually get completed, so they're trying to do the worst of what's there now and that would be great for those folks out that way because it's been a long time since they've had a really good service."

Highways in Saskatchewan could always use some work.

"It's a tough call, it's a shame that we can't keep the ditches cleared better for wildlife because it is a little bit dangerous, you've got grass growing tall right at the road and you don't get a lot of warning when something comes out of the ditch. It's all to do with money, we haven't got the money to do it liked we used to and let's hope that gets turned around because even one or two cuts would help a lot but believe me we're trying to do the best we can with what we have,' expressed Dennis Moore.
