There may be some good news on the subject of impaired driving in Saskatchewan. SGI reported that last month, there were 209 impaired driving related offences, their lowest of the year.

"So that's good news," explained Tyler McMurchy with SGI. "The bad news is that there are still hundreds of people deciding to make that very poor decision to get behind the wheel when they are impaired."

In an effort to keep this trend, SGI and law enforcement want to keep the focus on impaired driving.

"December and January Traffic Safety Spotlights are both impaired driving and throughout this holiday season police will out watching for impaired drivers including check-stops and other maybe less obvious means of enforcement, using unmarked cars, being stationed near bars on weekends, that sort of thing."

"So that's why it's always important if you are heading out and your celebrations over the holidays involve alcohol, if you are going to be impaired in any way, please plan a safe ride home. There are so many better options whether it's a cab, a designated driving service, a sober friend or family member, or just staying the night."

Estevan Police Chief, Paul Ladouceur echoed those comments.

"It's the holidays, the last thing we want in our community is a tragedy. Plan a safe way home, drink responsibly, get a DD, call a taxi, walk if you have to but please, please, please, don't drink and drive."
