Following the American government's decision to place tariffs on Canadian steel, many consumers in southeast Saskatchewan are left wondering if they should be concerned.

"I think it's really too early to know on that," shared Lori Carr, MLA for Estevan, "until we see exactly where all of the tariffs do land. And if this truly is just some sort of a tactic on the part of the American government to try and get the NAFTA deal done in a more favourable way for the American government."

"It's really unfortunate because it's almost like negotiating in bad faith. But having said that, we just have to wait and see because we really don't know what all of this will mean."

She added that Evraz Steel has a 25% tariff on their products that they will be selling. A 10% tariff is planned for aluminium.

"It's going to be harder for them to move that product into the US."

Canada is retaliating with tariffs of their own set to come into effect on July 1st on items such as maple syrup, ketchup, and mustard.
