Local members of the EMO committee were treated to a presentation from Chris Chittick from The Tornado Hunters, a group of storm chasers from Regina, on Wednesday.

"That was an excellent meeting, very well received," shared Fire Chief, Dale Feser. "It was well attended by EMPO committee members that are by and large made up of a lot of emergency services as well as some background support staff. Estevan Police Service, RCMP, the Estevan EMS, fire department, we had city managers, public information officers, HAM radio guys, hospitals."

"He basically came in and made a very good presentation regarding the science behind storms and storm chasing. It was actually fitting seeing we just recently went through an event and we are quite possibly expecting an event today, later on, this evening."

Feser adds that the information will help him and his department prepare for and respond to severe weather.

"A lot of the information he provided was around storm development and typically how storms react in the environment. The daytime heating that it takes to build the storm, he discussed capping of thunderstorms which can lead to their weakening or if there is a lack of capping, continue to strengthen."

He also addressed the typical direction of storm movement.

"Typically moving in a north-north-easterly fashion. So orientation of where you are especially if you are on an emergency scene or responding to an emergency call is very critical so we can stay out of the storm's path, and where the more severe weather will be within that system."
