Situated about a ten-minute drive east of Estevan up Highway 18, the town of Bienfait and its 710 residents are closely connected to Estevan. Economically and culturally, they're a quintessential part of southeast Saskatchewan.

"I would say we are an extension of Estevan really," said town administrator Jessica Franklin. "We're just within minutes. We have mining, we have oil, we have agriculture."

A lot of work gets done in and around Bienfait as part of those industries, and when the working day wraps up, there are plenty of opportunities for people to unwind. Bienfait has quite an array of recreational facilities, all easily accessible within the town.

"The town of Bienfait enjoys a multitude of recreational facilities," Franklin said. "We have an outdoor pool, baseball diamonds, a curling rink, and an ice arena. We also have a museum and as well a regional library, all within walking distance."

The swimming pool, in particular, has been big for Bienfait this summer, as so many other recreational facilities have been forced to either close down or reduce their hours. But Bienfait was allowed to open their pool as of July 6, and they've been keeping it up ever since. They've also done a lot of work on the pool in recent years.

"A few years ago we had a new pool built," Franklin said, adding that they've been trying to keep things as normal as possible and the pool is now open seven days out of the week. "We've got some new matting. Essentially everything is brand new."

Bienfait is rich in history as well, having been incorporated as a village in 1912 and earning status as a town in 1957. It was also the staging point for a major historical moment in the southeast, as in 1931 striking miners from Bienfait walked to Estevan, leading to the Estevan Riot.

"History throughout the town of Bienfait is very rampant,' said Franklin. "Do not miss the historical museum we have and the old coal locomotive on the north end of Main Street."

Bienfait also has Weldon School. In French, the words "bien fait" mean "well done". But the town was named for Antoine Charles Bienfait.
