Rain or shine, the Estevan Fire and Rescue services have had their share of calls to attend in the past few days.

"There was a tree fire that we attended right around the 2:00 mark there yesterday afternoon when the storm had rolled through the city. It appears to be the result of the wind coming up and the trees coming into contact with the powerlines," explained Fire Chief Dale Feser.

"Fire crews attended the scene and provided traffic control to prevent anybody coming into the area. We contacted SaskPower, who attended the scene, and it looks like they're going to have to trim some trees back. The fire was already out due to the rain, upon arrival, so we just handed off the scene to SaskPower and returned to the station."

He added that the tree was on private residential property, and advises folks to phone SaskPower if they see branches encroaching on powerlines, who will come and prune as needed for safety.

Crews also attended an accident on Highway 39 west Sunday evening. A motorcyclist had had to take extreme avoidance measures, laying the bike on it's side to keep from hitting a deer crossing the road. The rider had minor injuries as a result.

Members of the Estevan Fire Department were also in attendance at the funeral of the RCMP officer killed in an accident on Highway 361. Feser noted a large turnout from many emergency services.

"We are a fairly tight knit group, and we've worked in different capacities on the job, and we socialize away from the job as well. Anytime we have one of our emergency service partners hurt, we all hurt, so I was very happy to see the outpouring of support to the family to all emergency services."

He mentioned that he had also known the officer, Constable Donaldson, personally.

"We worked quite closely on scene, and we used to see each other quite regularily in the gym after our shifts, so we developed a relationship away from work as well."

One other item Feser pointed out was the fact that Estevan has not had any fire bans issued as of yet. Although the conditions have ridden the line, they haven't quite tipped the edge. With the recent rains, there will be even less need for the bans for the time being.
