While some questions were being asked inside a town hall meeting at the University of Regina about the carbon tax and other issues surrounding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government, outside the event was even noisier.

Jay Riedel with the local Yellow Vest Movement led a convoy of vehicles, similar to the one that was in Estevan last month, about five to six kilometres long around Trudeau’s public meeting at the provincial capital. He organized it with Brenda Stepp in Regina.

“I’ve been trying to organize it with her the last few days once we realized he was coming,” said Riedel. “She got the map made up so we posted that (online). Once we got to Regina, she led us around. I’ve got my truck with flashing orange beacon on the roof and I pretty much led it around.”

There were about 100 semi trucks, pickup trucks and cars, Riedel said. The turnout was good and it would have been nice to see a few more, but he understands people were working.

“It was amazing to see quite a few people from Estevan actually showed up,” he said. “That was good to make that trip and have to take that time off work when they were working. We made our presence felt. We went thru the venue there and everybody was honking their horns and I’m sure they would have heard us inside.”

The protest outside lined up about 5:30 p.m. from Sask Polytechnic and then at 6 p.m. they started making their way over to the University of Regina from there.

“There were a few protesters outside and they were yelling and screaming at us, and they were happy to see us,” Riedel said. “It was a good turnout.”

Riedel said there were no anti-pipeline protesters among the crowd.
“Everybody was well-behaved,” he said. “Everybody was shouting things... but that’s the thing with the yellow vests here. There’s no violence. Everybody is on the same page.”
