Throughout the month of October, SGI puts another spotlight on the problem that is plaguing the province; impaired driving.

"We're really trying to get people thinking about it, making smart decisions, and planning a safe ride home if they are going to go out drinking. The police's focus will be on impaired driving for the rest of the year," expressed Manager of Media Relations for the Crown corporation, Kelly Brinkworth.

For the month of October, 335 offences were reported province-wide. On that note, twenty one of those were caused by motorists having a low blood alcohol content between .04 to .08. As well, 314 Criminal Code charges were laid due to people not complying wtih an officer, having a BAC above .08, or impaired driving.

Attached to that report, law enforcement agencies issued tickets related to impaired driving:

  • 3,208 speeding violations
  • 289 tickets for distracted driving (180 of those for using a cellphone while driving)
  • 260 tickets for inappropriate or no seatbelt/child safety seat

SGI is attempting to get people to thinking about the new legislation that will be taking full effect in January 1st, which brings in more harsh penalties in terms of impaired and distracted driving.

"Most importantly, plan a safe ride home. If you think you're going to be tempted to drive after you've been drinking, leave your car at home to get rid of that temptation altogether. You and your friends can draw straws and take turns being the Designated Driver. You can also arrange a ride from family members to pick you up after an event," she concluded.

The focus on impaired and distracted driving will continue through November and December.
