The new SJHL season is just over 24 hours away, and after a perfect preseason the Estevan Bruins are a confident bunch.

Returning players Jake Heerspink and Hayden Guilderson joined Rock 106 on Thursday morning to tee up the Bruins home opener against the Melville Millionaires on Friday, September 15.

"We're always a confident team here, and our goal is always looking to win," said Heerspink, entering his second season as a Bruin. "Obviously the preseason was great for us and we want to carry that through. Everyone's excited and everybody's ready to go, so it's what you want to see."

The Bruins got the better of Melville last year, as they won the Viterra Division, while the Millionaires were the division cellar dwellers. The Bruins won't let themselves get cocky, however.

"They're just a hardworking, honest team," Heerspink said of the Millionaires. "Last year wasn't one of their best seasons but that doesn't mean anything now."

The Bruins may not be cocky, but there's a definite air of anticipation surrounding the team this year.

"Everyone's excited," said Guilderson, who is also entering his second season in Estevan. "Our practice this week has been good and we've put the work in so we can hopefully get two wins to start the season off."

"We're excited to start off against Melville because near the end of the year they were getting better and they're a hardoworking team. Everyone's got something to prove this year so it's going to be pretty exciting come Friday."

The Bruins are returning quite a few players from the team that finished first in their division during the 2016-17 regular season. The familiarity and depth has the team looking for big things this season.

"The forward roster's pretty deep," said Guilderson. "We've got a lot of returning players and the new guys are strong and ready to make an impact this season."

On defense, Heerspink is one of five veteran players.

"Five returning guys is what you like to see. We've got some partners we're pretty familiar with and the new guys are showing lots of talent too, so that's really good to see."

The Bruins will drop the puck on the new season officially at 7:30 Friday.

"Do what you can to get out there," Heerspink said to the fans. "It means a lot for us to see faces in the stands The more of you there are the more energy we have. It's always nice to see a full crowd and have that support behind us."

Estevan and Melville will play again the next day in Melville, with puck drop going at 7:30. Both games will be broadcast live on Rock 106 with Rob Mahon on the call.
