ROD MARCH:

With summertime not too far away, our community is getting excited to enjoy another wonderful season outside in Estevan!

That's why city crews are hard at work in May and June to make everything look spick-and-span!

Thanks to Rod March, City of Estevan Parks and Facilities Manager, for joining us on Sun102 to chat!

More from the City of Estevan:

The Parks department has a few major construction projects on the go this summer.

Royal Heights Veterans Memorial Park will see some major improvements. One being a washroom facility similar to the one at Padwick Park thanks to a generous donation from the Estevan Rotary Foundation . The park will also have a new accessible play structure constructed with a poured in place rubber fall protection.

Work will be happening over at Kensington Greens area to fix drainage issues from low elevation sites. There may be an opportunity to build a splash pad there as well, but it will just depend on what the budget allows us to complete over there this year. The first step is to fix the drainage issues.

Work will be completed at the Estevan Cemetery. A columnbarium is a place for urns to be stored and the cemetery will have a new addition to the area built for storage of the urns and complete the columbarium gardens area

The Estevan Rotary Foundation is sponsoring 100 trees at the Estevan Girls Softball Diamonds. Trees will be planted near the outfield fencing.

As far as city wide work, the beautification program is still undergoing, you will see work being done on self watering planters that are more environmentally friendly and efficient for city crews.
As of right now all parks are open and operational and we want to remind everyone that they are a busy place during the summer months. Kids are out and about so please watch out for them. Speed limits are 30km/hour in the areas.

We are waiting for the weather to be stable and get a bit warmer to turn on the irrigation systems. That being said our splash pads will be open once those irrigation lines are ready, most likely around June 1st. Padwick Park and Royal Heights Veterans Memorial Park do have different rules at the parks because of them being splash pads. The most notably one is no animals on the splash pads and climbing on the toys. The rules are posted at the parks for everyone’s safety and for the longevity of our infrastructure.

There will be a few events happening this year:

We will be hosting the Pre-Canada Day event at Centennial Park (next to the Power Dodge Curling Centre) on June 29th. Men without shame will be preforming, there will be fireworks, and a beer gardens. In the afternoon there will be a lot happening for the kids, such as bouncy houses, food trucks, funtazm kids show and face painting. More information will be shared once the event gets a bit closer.

Royal Heights Veterans Memorial Park wil host the second annual Slip n Slide party on August 23rd there will be 2 - 75ft slip and slides and a huge water fight. With the line-ups last year, we’ve improved the venue with an additional big slide and increased water capacity Food and bubbles and music. Its just a fun afternoon to close out the summer.

Operation clean sweep gets underway from May 14 – 21st. It is an event with effort from everyone within the city to do a sort of spring cleaning of their yards, business, homes, etc and to close the clean sweep the City of Estevan Landfill will have a free landfill weekend for residents of the city of Estevan.

With the nice weather mosquito season is approaching. Residents can help buy cleaning out gutters, removing standing water in their yards. We will be controlling, monitoring and treating the presence of larvae of the mosquito within 3kms of the city limits.
