BECKY WESTLING & MICHAELLA MATHIES:

We were overjoyed to have a pair of lovely ladies from the City of Estevan on CJ1150 this Tuesday morning!

Marketing Coordinator Becky Westling and one of their new summer students Michaella Mathies chatted with Danny about a summer of exciting events coming to the Energy City!

The new Visitor Centre location tentative opening date is slated for June 4th. The centre will be open in the Estevan Leisure Centre from 9am – 5pm 7 days a week until the end of August.

We chose to make the move for a number of reasons mainly to better serve the visitors that are already in Estevan. The decision to move wasn’t taken lightly by myself, the city manager or council. We looked at statistics over the past number of years and saw a steady decline in the visitors coming to use the centre for the sole purpose of visitor information. People just don’t travel on whims any more. They plan and prepare and use online mediums to do that.

The visitor centre will still have the same amenities as the other location with items for a gift shop, the location for energy tours and visitors can still get maps and brochures there. If any attractions. Hotelier or restaurants want their brochures displayed just ask and we can check space for availability.

Energy tours will be starting in the next couple weeks, in May and June they run Monday to Friday with a morning and afternoon tour. And in July and August – Tuesday – Saturday, and again with morning and afternoon tours. Anyone can book one of these free tours by calling the visitor centre at 306-634-6044

We will have two Summer Students staffing the visitor centre this year. One student will be returning from last year, Lorin Fichter and our new addition Michealla Mathies is here with me today.

Michaella was born and raised in Estevan and knows a lot about our community. She enjoys spending time with her family that almost all live in Estevan as well. She played a lot of sports growing up and was highly involved in female hockey.

She is an outgoing person that loves helping others learn about Estevan. She feels lucky to have received this summer position that gives her the opportunity to show people in her community that Estevan has so much to offer. She looks forward to attending Northern Alberta Institute of Technology where she will be studying Captioning and Court Reporting. She will be putting to use her skills this summer by sharing her experiences of Estevan in a blog.

Experience Estevan will take a new turn this year with the addition of a blog. Currently we are working on getting the main frame of it set up and working properly. We are hoping to have it up and running in the next few weeks.
