The recent cold warning that's taken over not just Estevan or Southeast Saskatchewan, but has in fact swallowed up the whole prairies, is continuing.

That cold warning is seeing temperatures regularly fall below the -30 degree mark at night, and with the current wind chill it's feeling like temperatures are in the -40s.

Estevan is even in a better part of the province, as some areas have seen wind chills approaching -50 and some temperatures hovering near -40.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Natalie Hasell details how a cold warning is classified.

"We are definitely in warning criteria," said Hasell, "This is due to wind chill values making it reach down to below minus 40, certainly has this in the morning, though by the afternoon we should see things improve a little bit."

This cold coming in is mainly from the north, which means that the wind chill is pulling much colder polar air down to the South.

Hasell says that we'll be going into and out of what should be a cold warning, thanks to a decent warming up in the afternoon.

"Winds are just strong enough to make a difference," said Hasell, "But I think by the time we get to this afternoon we won't be in warning criteria exactly but we will be right back into it by the time the sun sets, so this extreme cold warning is really going to be in place for quite a while."

That cold warning will be interrupted by a quick reprieve over the weekend, with the forecast currently calling for single-digit temperatures on Sunday.

"This weekend we'll see a development of a low on the east side of the Rockies in Alberta and that low will advance a little bit towards the east," said Hasell, "So we should see our wind direction change in parts of the p[rairies, but that doesn't last for very long."

Hasell also said to expect some more snow to come by next week.
