Police across Saskatchewan will be on the lookout for distracted drivers throughout the month of October. It's part of SGI's Safety Spotlight.

"Either using their cell phone to talk or text while they are driving or other sort of distracted driving behaviors such as putting on make-up or maybe you are talking to a passenger or eating, those kind of things aren't illegal to do, but if you are doing those and it takes your attention off the road then police can charge you with driving without undue care and attention," said Kelley Brinkworth, Manager of Media Relations with SGI.

The total fine for both using your cellphone and the charge of driving without undue care and attention is $280, along with four demerit points and a long-term negative impact on your insurance.

Brinkworth also stated that anyone who currently completing the graduated licensing program cannot use hand-free devices.

Distracted driving is the number one cause of accidents in the province and the number three contributing factor in fatal accidents, behind speeding and impaired driving.
