While it may not be the most ideal weather for riding around, it's now possible to drive around Estevan's roads on an e-scooter.
The change came during the Estevan city council's meeting, with the councilors revising Traffic Bylaw 2022-2064.
In it, they define an e-scooter as "an electric motor vehicle that does not exceed 500 watts; a maximum speed of 24 km/h on a level surface."
The change came after the province allowed municipalities to make their own choices on legality back in September.
Along with the new definition, a few rules were put into place regarding operating an e-scooter in Estevan.
Under section 61A, those include:
- E-scooters will only be permitted on roads with a speed of 50 kilometres per hour or less
- E-scooters cannot be operated at a speed greater than 24 km/hr
- The minimum operator age for an e-scooter is 16 years or older
- All riders of e-scooters are required to wear helmets
While e-scooter rental services have popped up in other cities, it's unknown if Estevan will be receiving one anytime in the near future.
