Parents in Estevan have reason to celebrate as the Estevan Area Literacy Group, in collaboration with Foundations Learning and Skills Saskatchewan, introduces the eagerly awaited Learn and Soar Program. Designed for children aged 3 to 5 and their parents/caregivers, this free 8-week initiative helps to foster a love for reading and literacy while providing valuable family bonding opportunities.

The Learn and Soar Program, an interactive family literacy venture, aims to empower parents and caregivers to engage actively in their children's literacy journey. Grace Caputo, a representative from the Estevan Area Literacy Group, explained, "Our Learn and Soar program is basically an interactive family literacy program where parents and caregivers and children can grow their literacy skills together through songs, rhymes, stories, literacy games, and activities."

This innovative program incorporates play-based learning and creates a literacy-rich environment to enhance language development and promote parent engagement. Ms. Caputo highlighted that the program revolves around thematic learning, providing a structured and fun approach to literacy development. The Learn and Soar Program is set to kick off on Wednesday, October 4th, running every Wednesday for eight consecutive weeks, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM, at the Estevan Public Library.

Reading can pose a challenge for some families, even when a parent is a proficient reader. Ms. Caputo emphasized the program's role in bridging this gap: "When families engage, it helps to enrich and expand children's experiences with literacy, which influences them for lifelong learning." Early exposure to reading and literacy skills can significantly impact a child's cognitive development, setting the stage for future learning success.
