There is always a need for extra support within our authorities, and after regulations were altered and mandates put forward, Saskatchewan Highway Officers and Conservation Officers can now help with typically police work.

In the case of the SHP, Brendan Tuchsherer, deputy chief of the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol gave some insight into what their new responsibilities have been.

"We are still doing a lot of weight and dimensions, vehicle equipment and safety as far as commercial vehicles. With our new extended mandate into the PRT, we now are also looking, when we are on the highway, for things like impaired driving. We are running into narcotics and those types of things as well."

He continued, adding that their communication is very close to all other forms of law enforcement.

"We do a lot of joint operations with city police, RCMP and CTSS in the Estevan and Weyburn area. We have had some impaired drivers and we've run into some drugs on the highways as well and again we've also taken vehicles out of service and that kind of thing related to commercial vehicles as well."

He finished speaking towards truck drivers and said that logbook violations can land you a stiff fine and even three-day suspensions.
