Last week our DiscoverEstevan news team sent out a poll asking you about flu season.

We received 160 responses. Here is a summary:

  • 69.7 per cent of respondents indicated that they have not yet been sick with the flu this fall and winter, while 30.3 per cent said they have already been sick
  • 77 per cent of people said they always stay home when they are sick, while 23 per cent do not
  • Nearly half of respondents (48.7 per cent) believe staying home when sick is the most important measure in preventing the spread of disease. 18.6 per cent said it was frequent hand washing and hand sanitizer, 14.7 per cent voted for up to date immunizations, 12.2 per cent indicated coughing and sneezing into your sleeve, and 5.8 per cent said it was wearing a mask
  • 78.5 per cent of people are not in favour of a mandatory mask mandate indoors in Saskatchewan, while 21.5 per cent are in favour

We also received varying written responses on what best practices to follow for staying healthy.

"Supplement Vitamin D and C during winter months," one respondent wrote. "Get outside for fresh air and exercise, get enough sleep, and eat healthy. Make sure to not be isolated...get out with family and friends and laugh. We are rarely ill."

"I think using common sense, stay home if you are not feeling well and if you feel better wearing a mask in public that is your prerogative to do so," another respondent wrote. "Keep safe everyone."

Another person surveyed was adamant that masks are not the answer.

"Stay at home when sick. Take vitamins, exercise, drink lots of water. Wearing a mask does not help," they wrote.

"Eating good food, going out in fresh air, visiting with friends, laughing and enjoying life like we've always done," wrote one person. "Lockdowns and mask mandates only make things worse."

Another respondent would like to see changes in grocery stores.

"Try to get plenty of sleep, hand washing and avoiding sick people when possible. I would like to see hand cleaner and cart washing available in stores," they wrote.

"Be diligent about hand washing, be considerate of others and stay home when sick," wrote another.
