Throughout the month of November SGI's traffic spotlight was focused on suspended drivers and unregistered vehicles.

In total police caught 341 people driving while suspended and issued 558 tickets for driving an unregistered vehicle or trailer.

Tyler McMurchy, Manager of Media Relations with SGI details the importance of focusing on those driving unregistered vehicles.

"In many cases, people who are driving vehicles unregistered there are other issues associated with that. Sometimes traffic safety issues and police do find a lot of people driving unregistered vehicles. The other issue with that of course is you don't have insurance"

McMurchy adds that if you are driving with a suspended or unregistered vehicle and you cause a collision then you will be held financially responsible.

In addition, McMurchy shares the consequences of being caught driving while suspended or with an unregistered vehicle.

"If you get caught those consequences are tough. I mean its either an expensive fine or a vehicle seizure and a court summons which will likely mean additional financial penalties and further driving prohibitions and maybe even more serious consequences depending on your driving record and the offences your committing."

Nearly 180 law enforcement vehicles are now equipped with automated license plate readers which can quickly pick up on the fact that a vehicle is unregistered.

Police also issued 3867 speeding tickets, 447 distracted driving tickets, 226 tickets for improper seatbelt use and 357 impaired driving charges.

McMurchy says that December's traffic spotlight is focused on impaired driving and police will be out looking for those drivers.

Each month, the impaired driving offenses continue to remain consistent or higher than the previous month.

SGI is aware that this holiday season will look different, however, they are reminding everyone to please remember to drive safe and only get behind the wheel if you are sober and not impaired in any way.
