The ECS senior boys basketball team was at SHSAA provincial championships over the weekend, otherwise known as Hoopla. This is the first time since the late 90s that an Estevan team has made it to the event. We talked with Coach Trevor Dutka to find out how the boys handled there games at provincials.

"The boys did very well, we lost our first game to the number 1 ranked team in the province but we played them well. Then we went over to the consolation side we ended up beating Walter Murry whos ranked 5th we were ranked 8th. Yesterday morning we had a tough one against Luthern and we lost but I'm very proud of the boys."

Being at any sporting event can be nerve-racking but this just wasn't any event it was provincials and the high caliber of opponents would make anyone nervous but according to Dutka once the boys started to get into the swing of things the nerves got put on hold.

"Especially the first game you could see the boys were nervous we were down 26 points at the half but then they cut the deficit to 16 and they only lost by 16, once we started playing our game the nerves were put on hold and we definitely played as a team."

The boys played 3 games over the weekend and John Andres was leading scorer on the Estevan side for all 3 games. When asked Dutka said johns a leader for sure but its a team game and everyone depends on everyone. The boys showed they could compete with the best of the best over the weekend walking into the tournament in 8th and coming out in 6th. Dutka went on to say.

"It was a great weekend and I'm very very proud of the boys, the guys came together right at the end of the year and played very well, I was very impressed with their play."
