Some talented young curling teams from across the south east will be sliding up and down the sheets of the Estevan Curling Club this weekend.

The club is hosting the high school mixed and girls senior district playdowns, beginning Friday morning and 10 a.m. and running until Saturday afternoon.

The event will see two local teams from Estevan Comprehensive School, along with rinks from Lampman, Oxbow, Redvers, Wawota, and Carnduff.

It's a double knockout format with eight end games, with the winners getting closer to qualifying for provincials.

"There will be two teams from the girls division moving on to regionals, and there will be three teams in the mixed that will be moving on to regionals," said Estevan Curling Club manager Pauline Ziel-Grimsrud. "This is the first step in moving on to the provincials, which we hope teams from the south east will get there."

Estevan will also host the regionals event on March 4-5.

Ziel-Grimsrud said there will be a number of talented teams coming in from the surrounding area for the event.

"We definitely have some talent coming in...the Lampman School has some very talented teams, Oxbow too," she said. "The Carnduff girls are going to be a very strong team too."

She added that she expects the ECS mixed team to have a strong showing as well.

"I think it's going to be some pretty good curling, and of course the doors are open, there's no admission, and everyone is welcome to come down and check it out."

Discover Estevan will have live updates from the club on all three of our stations on Friday morning.
