Estevan is going to see a few more police officers around the community next week as they look to take part in a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program blitz.

That would also include police officers from across the country, to help keep an eye on the streets on June 20 and 21.

SGI Spokesperson Tyler McMurchy details what they'll be looking at.

"Essentially what this does is it brings together law enforcement officers from agencies across the province to do a two-day traffic enforcement blitz. At various points in the community, people will be able to see law enforcement taking place that might be speed enforcement looking for things like distracted driving, and always keeping an eye out for impaired drivers generally. There is also some enforcement of commercial vehicle regulations as well as vehicle equipment regulation."

"So just generally a two-day traffic enforcement blitz with officers from not just the Estevan Police Service but also their colleagues in the RCMP, Regina, Prince Albert, Weyburn, Saskatoon, and other agencies as well."

Officers will be using a variety of methods, keeping an eye out for traffic safety concerns.

"They may do stop checks, police do have the ability to stop any driver, to check for sobriety," said McMurchy, "There will be places where speed enforcement is happening, they'll be looking for people not wearing their seat belts, and driving distracted. So it's generally kind of looking at those major causes of traffic safety concerns and as well as things like commercial vehicle violations and vehicle equipment regulation violations."

The STEP blitzes are part of the summer months of enforcement for police officers, appearing in multiple communities.

"It happens generally around once a month throughout the warmer months, I think this is one of six that are planned for Saskatchewan, there is one at the start of May in Saskatoon and then one at the end of May in Yorkton. So it's Estevan in June and then next month there will be one in Moosejaw."
