The start to the baseball season was a big one in Estevan including the first tournament of the season, and two doubleheaders.

Starting with the Southeast Twins Midget AAA team. They were the first of the two doubleheaders against the Parkland Expos. For the Twins, a more perfect game to start doesn't exist. They picked up an 11-0 victory thanks in part to a stellar performance from their pitcher for the opening five innings.

"It was a great pitching performance by Jayke Smolinski. He had 10 strikeouts over five innings and only allowing one hit," says Head Coach Trent Dorrance.

Obviously, in the 11-0, the bats were alive and swinging as well. Rhett Krafchuk was 3 for 3 from the plate, Hudson Neuberger was 3 for 4, and Tanner Dorrance smacked one out of the park to help his team.

In the second game, pitching started to suffer a little bit as the main thing that hurt the Twins was walks. They walked 9 batters throughout the game to lead the Twins to a 7-5 loss.

Next action for the Twins is this coming Saturday with another doubleheader against the Regina Athletics.

Sticking with Midget Baseball, the AA Midget Brewers had a doubleheader of their own against the North Battleford Beavers, and unlike their AAA counterparts, their first game was more of a learning experience. They lost the first one 8-3, but part of that is in relation to being a little short staffed.

"Our pitching was pretty good for not being able to work on it in the last couple weeks cause of the weather, same thing with the hitting," says Head Coach Tim Miller. "I really liked our fielding, a couple of errors here or there but that's going to happen. It gives us coaches a little bit more focus of what we need to work on."

In the second game, the Brewers got warmed up on the bats a little bit as they battled to a 7-7 tie.

Finally, the 11U Mosquito team had their home tournament with 6 teams around the province. In four games, they went 2-2 to start off the season. They got into the bronze medal final where they managed to beat the team from Moose Jaw in a high scoring 18-14 affair to take the win and the third place spot. Head Coach Darcy Henry shares his thoughts on what he hopes to see from his team.

"The kids improving, building a program, and getting more kids playing travelling baseball in Estevan."
