The Kin-Club outdoor rink looks a little different today. Members from the Estevan Roller Derby were out Sunday afternoon to paint lines on the concrete pad for their track.

"We're very excited that the Kinsmen have poured cement," said Lorelei Lachambre Coach of the Estevan Jr. Roller Derby Club.

"Everybody in Estevan thinks that this is going to be the best outdoor hockey rink but little do they know that it is the best summertime outdoor roller derby track."

Lachambre explains that when they found out that the Kinsmen and Kinettes were looking into creating an out door hockey rink, the dimensions they were using would be too small for their roller derby track.

"So I phoned the Kinsmen and asked if I could present to them, the sport of roller derby and why it's so amazing. And all the people involved in roller derby in Estevan and the difference it is making in our community, especially for young girls. And so I did a presentation and brought in the dimensions of the track and what we would need in order to make it happen."

"And they were absolutely amazing and absolutely on board with making it large enough so we could use it as a summer facility."

The roller derby club was extremely grateful to the Kinsmen and Kinettes for adding the extra concrete for them

"They made it the perfect size for us! It is absolutely perfect, our track fits perfect. We can fit our players' benches, we have a penalty box set up here and a full sized track so we are able to host games. Because it does have to be regulation size to host games. It's amazing, it's exactly what we could have wanted or dreamed for."

Lachambre is passionate about roller derby and she sees so many positive things about it.

"It's one of the very few sports that I've come across that is really welcoming to people of all different shapes and sizes. It's an amazing outlet and form of expression for girls in this sport. It's the expression, they get to wear crazy outfits, they get to pick their own derby name, they pick a number, they get to express themselves."

"And the other part that is so amazing about it is that it is a full contact sport. A lot of them find this passion and aggression that they didn't know they had and then they put them on the track and really let them go. And they can be themselves and find out how strong they actually are."

"Right now we have 27 girls ages 10 to 16. A lot of them has never really fit into a sport and they had tried lots of areas before. Or they had never really tried sports and they like the idea of roller skating."

The girls are excited to get out to practice and get ready for their games.
